Ceramic matrix composites are designed for acoustic isolation, making ultrasonic inspection challenging.

However, Ultran’s high performance non-contact ultrasound transducers and system were able to produce high signal to noise ratio images of ceramic matrix composites and their defects.

The inspection was conducted using focused non-contact ultrasound transducers for high-resolution defect detection.  Defects include delamination, programmed core abnormalities of varying sizes, and core structural damage.
